Like flora crimes, crimes involving fauna species reflects the poaching, illicit trade and possession of species covered by CITES, as well as any other species protected by national law. Under the Index, to account for the plethora of species across the African continent, the ‘top five most illicitly traded and/or poached fauna species in each country are considered, including rhinos, elephants, great apes, lion bones, and pangolins, among others. The Index also considers protected marine species, and Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing falls under this category.
